About the city
Digne-les-Bains, or simply and historically Digne, is a French commune in the Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur region. Located on the edge of the Digne pre-Alps, on both sides of the Bléone, Digne-les-Bains is the prefecture of the department of Alpes de Haute-Provence.
City areas
The green areas around town make it a good choice for a vacation. Digne is very proud and boastful of its green space, especially of the to magnificent Botanical Garden and Butterfly Garden, the most visited natural reserves in town.
Attractions
Digne is somewhat a historical town, which has kept its scars through time, as a reminder of the tumultuous history. Having seen wars and plague epidemics, the towns two wonderful pieces of Romanesque and Gothic architecture still stand to this day.
Transportation
The fastest way into Digne is by plane, although the closest airport is the one at Nice, 150 km away. From here a train link is provided by the TER Provence, which passes through Digne on its way to Grenoble. By car the E712 is your best bet.
Events
Lavender is a very popular flower in this town, and as such it is granted its very own celebration. The Corso of lavender is the town’s greatest festivity, honoring the delicate flower and the city’s nickname as capital of lavender.
Restaurnats & Nightlife
Digne’s dining scene is somewhat colorful as it presents many specialties from around the world. Most restaurants also offer delightful settings and wonderful prompt service. The nightlife scene however isn’t much. Many bars close at midnight and some don’t go past 2 am.
History & Civilization
Dignes les Bains dates back to the neolithic era and became a frequent commercial stop during the Roman era. Since then, the commune has been noted for being a primary center of the lavender trade.
Diocese of Digne
The Roman Catholic Diocese of Digne, is a diocese of the Latin Rite of the Roman Catholic church in France. Established in the 4th century as the Diocese of Digne, the diocese is now known as the Diocese of Digne, Riez and Sisteron, since 1922.
